Python is reported to be the next "AML" for ESRI. AML was called a "scripting language", but could be extended to write full applications. The same is true for Python. Though it can be used for simple scripts, it is a full development language based on objects used on many platforms. It has a large user base outside of ESRI users. RenameField.py — script to rename a field within a dataset (code).
ItemInfo.py — script to examine field definitions within a dataset (code).
MakeControlLayer.py—program to create a survey monument database layer (advanced).
CopyShape is an ArcToolbox tool developed in Python. It allows a user to select shapefiles from many locations and folders, to be copied to one output folder: Package Zip File for ArcGIS 9.0 (download)
